The ASHE New England President appoints Committee Chairs at the Section Annual Meeting. 

Committee Chairperson - The Committee Chair is an active Section member appointed to the committee position by the President and serves at the discretion of the President. The chair coordinates and directs the committee’s work and reports progress and/or recommendations to the Section Board Director that they are assigned under.

Annual Programs & Events

Job Description: The Events and Programs Committee is a vital part of ASHE’s mission to promote the advancement of transportation and highway engineering. Committee members are responsible for planning, organizing, and executing events that foster professional development, networking, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Event Planning: Develop and coordinate technical programs, seminars, workshops, and social events for ASHE members, in full coordination with the Board of Directors.
  • Logistics Management: Secure venues, manage catering, coordinate schedules, and ensure all event logistics are handled smoothly.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Treasurer for budgeting, and with the Secretary and Marketing & Communications Committee to promote events.
  • Vendor and Speaker Coordination: Identify and liaise with guest speakers, sponsors, and vendors as needed. Present to the Board for discussion prior to making commitments.
  • Member Engagement: Create engaging and inclusive events that encourage participation and enhance the member experience.
  • Post-Event Review: Collect feedback and evaluate event success to inform future planning.

Marketing & Communications Committee

Job Description: Ensures that information technology (IT) is used appropriately for ASHE. Establishes and maintains the Section website. Coordinates Section activities with respect to ASHE Cloud.

Solicits information from Board members, committee chairs, and members for publication in the eBlast and social media. Publishes Section communications to members on a regular basis as directed by the Board of Directors. 

Membership Committee

Job Description: Monitors membership and membership data for ways to increase membership and member retention. Works with the Student Chapter Committee to monitor student chapters and promote membership growth and retention.

Mentoring - Young Members & Student Chapter Committee

Job Description:  Develops criteria for the definition of Young Member and publicizes it to the Section. Encourages participation of Young Members in Section activities. Prepares and submits an annual report to the Section Board of Directors on activities.

The Mentoring - Young Members & Student Chapter Committee is committed to fostering the growth and engagement of early-career professionals within ASHE. The committee develops and promotes mentoring opportunities, supports student and young member involvement, and helps cultivate the next generation of leaders in the transportation and highway engineering industry.

Develops and implements a mentoring program to support the next generation.

Promotes the formation and continued support of student chapters at nearby universities and colleges.

What We do: Leads efforts to mentor and develop Young Members and students by defining engagement criteria, promoting participation, implementing mentoring programs, supporting student chapters, and reporting annually to the Section Board on related activities.

The American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) New England Chapter is launching and expanding its Young Members Group. This group is for early-career engineers, planners, inspectors, and transportation professionals who want to:

  • Build real professional connections across agencies, consultants, and contractors
  • Learn directly from leaders shaping transportation policy and delivery in New England
  • Develop leadership, communication, and technical perspective beyond the day-to-day grind
  • Have a seat at the table as the next generation of infrastructure leaders

 

Whether you work in design, construction, inspection, planning, policy, or asset management, this group is a place to engage, contribute, and grow—without the fluff.

Special Committees

Job Description: From time to time, the President shall appoint Special (Ad-Hoc) Committees to perform certain functions. These committees shall be formed for a distinct purpose and shall be disbanded upon completion of the specified function.

Sponsorship Committee

Job Description: Develops and operates a sponsorship program in accordance with direction from the Section Board. Works with the Section Treasurer to maintain accurate records of finances associated with Sponsorships.

Scholarship Committee

Job Description: The Scholarship & Awards Committee plays a key role in recognizing excellence and supporting the next generation of transportation professionals. The committee is responsible for managing the scholarship program, coordinating awards, and celebrating the achievements of ASHE members and students who demonstrate outstanding contributions to the field of highway and transportation engineering.

Key Responsibilities: Scholarship Program Management: Develop and administer the annual scholarship program, including application development, outreach to eligible students, and coordination with local universities and colleges.

Awards Committee

Job Description: The Awards Committee plays a key role in recognizing excellence and supporting the next generation of transportation professionals. The committee is responsible for managing the Awards Program, coordinating award criteria, schedule, submission review, preparation of a slate and gaining Board concurrence, and finally celebrating the achievements of those who demonstrate outstanding contributions to the field of highway and transportation engineering.

Key Responsibilities: Annual Awards Program Management: Develop and administer the annual Awards Program, including application development, outreach to eligible candidates, and coordination with local agencies for nomination recommendations and support.

Technical Committee & PDH Committee

Job Description: The Technical Committee advances the technical knowledge, innovation, and professional development of ASHE members in the transportation and highway engineering industry. It delivers educational content, promotes emerging technologies, and supports continuing education through collaboration with the PDH, Alternative Delivery, and Innovation subcommittees.

Key Responsibilities

Manage technical publications and prepare articles for The Scanner.

Support technical programs and provide content for the Section Newsletter.

Coordinate CEU credit programs and ensure PDH policy compliance.

Submit annual PDH reports and promote professional growth through resources and initiatives.
